Course Offerings and Descriptions
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR/AED Course
This course is for anyone with medical training or interested in becoming involved in the medical field. or needs to renew their certification The BLS (Basic Life Support) Course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations and provide early use of an AED.
In the Instructor-led course, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing. Students also complete a written exam. The course is one session typically lasting 5- 6 hours. At the completion of the course a completion card in Basic Life Support will be provided that can be used to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements. The certification is good for 2 years. Prior to date of expiration printed on the card; the certification must be renewed with a BLS Refresher course.

American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR/AED Skills Validation Course (Instructor-Led Skills Session Only)
This course is for anyone who has already completed the American Heart Association's online BLS course and has to have their skills verified during an in-person skills session with a BLS instructor to receive their card.

American Heart Association Heartsaver® CPR Course
This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training. It’s format is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children, and infants.
This course teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning of skills. The course is one session typically lasting for 3-4 hours. At the completion of the course a completion card in CPR and AED will be provided that can be used to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements. The certification is good for 2 years and then expires.

American Heart Association Heartsaver® First Aid Course
In this video-based, instructor-led course that teaches students critical skills to respond to and manage an emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services arrives. Students learn duties and responsibilities of first aid rescuers; first aid actions for medical emergencies, including severe choking, heart attack, and stroke; and skills for handling injury and environmental emergencies, including external bleeding, broken bones and sprains, and bites and stings.

American Heart Association Family and Friends CPR
​
he Family and Friends CPR Course teaches the lifesaving skills of adult Hands-Only CPR, adult CPR with breaths, child CPR with breaths, adult and child AED use, infant CPR, and mild and severe airway block for adults, children, and infants. Skills are taught in a dynamic group environment using the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which provides students with the most hands-on CPR practice time possible.
Family & Friends CPR is for people who want to learn CPR but do not need a CPR course completion card to meet a job requirement. This course is ideal for community groups, new parents, grandparents, babysitters, and others interested in learning how to save a life.

Child and Babysitting Safety (CABS) Course
This interactive class is an important training program for potential babysitters and provides instruction in pediatric first aid, household safety, and the fundamentals of childcare. This course also includes training in the most current practices for safety and injury prevention while babysitting, emergency preparedness skills, and quick reference tools for babysitters. It also prepares children to interview for a babysitting job, select safe and suitable games and activities, prevent accidents, and begin babysitting safely. It is designed for youth participants ages 11 and up. The course is one session typically lasting 4 hours. Students will receive a course completion card at the end of class and a student resource book to keep.
Pet First Aid
The Pet First Aid & Disaster Response Guide is designed to help pet owners provide temporary, urgent care to pets until they can reach a veterinary or emergency clinic. The text will teach readers to care for their animals before, during, and after an emergency.

EMT Basic Class
The EMT-Basic course is designed to train individuals to provide comprehensive emergency medical care at the basic life support level to victims of illness or injury. Upon completion of the course, students are able to assess and appropriately treat conditions ranging from simple fractures, stroke, and chest pain to critical trauma, cardiac arrest, and childbirth. After successful completion of the course, students may then be eligible to sit for the national standard written and practical exam administered by the CT Department of Public Health in order to be certified as an EMT. Testing fees are separate and vary based on testing center
EMT-Continuing Education Weekends (Refresher)
Newington EMS also offers biannual EMT-B education classes. This is an online/classroom hybrid training course.These courses will meet new Connecticut 2020 re-certification requirements (NREMT) For more information and dates please contact us.
Borrow a Book Program
If you do not want to purchase a book for class to keep, you may borrow a book from our training library. Send us an email and we will coordinate a time with you to come and sign out the book before class. If the book is not returned the day of class your certification card will be withheld until the book has been returned. Books will also be available in class for reference.
